'Dieselgate' was the result of corporate-driven deregulation, with both member states and European institutions complicit in turning a blind eye to industry-wide abuse, according to a report released today by Corporate Europe Observatory and Friends of the Earth Europe.

Reformed ethics rules for European Parliamentarians lack bite, and will not do enough to build trust in European institutions, according to transparency campaigners. Reforms to the code of conduct for Members of European Parliament (MEP), voted in today, improve some voluntary transparency measures, but fail to include an explicit ban on controversial second jobs for MEPs in organisations that lobby the European Institutions.

Thousands of corporate lobbyists roam the corridors of power in Brussels, exercising undue and unclear influence on policy-making. Operating out of the spotlight, many of them do not hesitate to employ improper methods.

Friends of the Earth Europe challenges the opaque nature of lobbying in Brussels, which enables corporate lobbyists to convince policy-makers to put profit before people and planet. We campaign for a mandatory lobby register, seek to expose deceptive lobbying practices, and use access to information requests to shed light into the darkness.
