Corporate capture We are pushing for more democratic, accountable, transparent, balanced and fair policy-making

20 June 2017

More than 250 non-government organisations from across Europe have today released an alternative vision for a more democratic, just and sustainable Europe.

Intended to influence the debate on the future direction of Europe, this alternative vision is endorsed by organisations representing a multitude of public interest issues, including labour rights, culture, development, environment, health, women's rights, youth, and anti-discrimination groups.

As the European Commission reaches half-time in its term of office, campaigners are calling for urgent action to address the bias towards corporate interests as evidenced by data on lobby meetings held by Commissioners.

Corporate capture undermines democracy. It refers to the process whereby big business gains privileged access to policy-making processes, giving it a disproportionate influence, behind closed doors. This leads to the weakening, blocking or postponement of vital social and environmental legislation.

Friends of the Earth Europe challenges corporate capture. We are pushing for a more democratic and accountable European Union, and more transparent international policy negotiations. We demand greater transparency, balanced representation and fair access.
